At Pet Society Vet we use evidence-based medicine to support our high quality of pet care. Using our in-clinic laboratory we provide medical assessment through blood tests and microscopy. This means we can deliver a tailored and specific treatment plan for your pet with quick turnaround times. The simple microscope has a very large place in our lab and provides valuable information. We can often assess skin and ear disease, tumour cells, as well as urine and blood with a same day turn around.
With the use of in clinic blood analysers we can assess complete blood counts and biochemistry markers. This is used in pre anaesthetic health assessment, disease assessment, health monitoring, and for monitoring ongoing medication use. Pre anaesthetic blood testing is the most frequently performed test we use. It gives on site, rapid information and knowledge on your pet’s current health and is carried out prior to undertaking an anaesthetic. This enables us to identify any unexpected changes that may mean an important change to the procedure plan and ongoing care for your pet. It is also used to provide baseline and serial information on your pet’s ongoing health across their life. As discussed in the Wellness & Preventative Care page, routine blood work is of great significance and gives us the ability to know what is “normal” for your pet, and to detect when this might change.
Our in clinic pharmacy is stocked with commonly prescribed pet medicines for quick and convenient access to meet your pet’s medical needs. We also provide access to compounded medications and special medication orders if the need arises. A common conversation around prescription medications is the cost of purchasing medications from the vet directly versus an online pet pharmacy. One of the reasons for this discrepancy is the supply chain and wholesale cost that online pharmacies can access compared to the prices from vet wholesale suppliers. Another element to consider is that the costs of medications directly from the vet has a built-in prescription charge. This is allocated to all prescription medications for the knowledge, expertise, experience and time needed from your vet who knows what to prescribe, when, how much, in what form, how this may interact with other medicines or health of your pet, as well as the cost of stocking medications in a non-warehouse setting.
Sometimes investigating the use of medications is a more extensive task of research and discussion with colleagues and specialists which is often overlooked when considering the work and expertise that goes in to making medical decisions. When clients access their prescription medications online the work needed for the vet to make this medical decision stays the same. It is for this reason that vets charge prescription fees for clients requesting scripts to use online or at human pharmacies to access prescription medications.
While we try to make our prices accessible and achievable for our clients it is usually impossible to match what is offered online. Sometimes we may send you home with a prescription to take to a human or online pet pharmacy for medications that we do not stock, or to help you achieve the care needed for your pet if this offers a more financially achievable solution. Where possible we ask our community to support Pet Society Vet, and the veterinary industry as a whole, by choosing to purchase their medications and medical needs directly from the vet.
Compounding medications is another regularly utilised service we assist in providing. While we do not compound medications at Pet Society Vet, we organise compounded medications through a local specialised pharmacy who has worked with pet specific medications for several years. We can also access medications from BOVA, one of Australia’s largest compounding pharmacies located in NSW. We will give you options and recommendations based on what is best for you and your pet.
